Phoebe's Story

Phoebe the donkey, with overgrown hooves

Remembering Phoebe: A Donkey Rescued After Years of Neglect

In July of 2025, we were alerted to a heartbreaking situation: a bonded pair of donkeys left in a field for nearly a decade without proper care.

When we arrived, the female donkey was in devastating condition. Her hooves were so overgrown from neglect that they had caused permanent bone deformities.

Despite her suffering, she showed incredible strength, holding on as long as she could with her male companion by her side. After the donkeys arrived at the sanctuary, they were named Toby & Phoebe.

Emergency Care for Phoebe

Our veterinary and farrier team worked quickly to provide specialized treatment, pain relief, and proper nutrition. Phoebe finally experienced love and care after so many years of being forgotten.

A Heartbreaking Goodbye

Despite every effort, Phoebe’s body was too weak to recover. With heavy hearts, we said goodbye as her systems shut down. Our team was devastated, but we take comfort in knowing her final days were filled with compassion, dignity, and love.

Honoring Phoebe’s Memory

Phoebe’s story is a reminder of why our mission matters: no animal should endure years of silent suffering. While she is gone, her memory lives on in Toby—and in the work we continue to do for animals in need.

If you would like to honor Phoebe, please consider a donation in her name. Your support helps us continue to rescue, heal, and protect neglected animals.
